Formation Skydiving

Information about Formation Skydiving (FS) and the current world-record.

Formation Skydiving:

Formation Skydiving is a skydiving discipline wherein individuals in freefall attempt to build formations. This is done by flying relative to each other (thus: relative work) and successfully making contact with others in a formation – either by gripping a limb or a “gripper” on the person’s jumpsuit. Once one formation is successfully completed – jumpers often attempt to build additional “points” by rearranging and forming another formation. This is repeated until break-off altitude at which point jumpers track away from the formation prior to canopy deployment.

Formation Skydiving in Competition

In competition, and for the awarding of records (such as state records,) FS can further be divided into the following varieties:

4-way sequential

8-way sequential

16-way sequential

10-way speed

Large formations (Big Ways) *

* The current world-record for a formation in freefall is the 400-way which was accomplished in Thailand in 2008.
