Accelerated Freefall Pre-Course Preparation and Training Outline

E-mail Print PDF

This is a guide that describes a series of air skills and sequences you will need to be successful at your AFF Instructor Rating Course.

The basic skills are:

  • Close proximity flying (no contact flying, flying within one arms length.)
  • Fall rat adjustment (fall rate techniques, and dressing for success.)
  • Top and bottom end sequences.
  • Role reversals.
  • Maneuver flying (flying the line.)
  • Blocking techniques.
  • Air observation skills (body scanning.)
  • Rollover techniques.
  • Spin Stop techniques.
  • In-air communication skills (hand signals.)
  • Team communication skills.
  • Exits and hard exit techniques.

The techniques presented here are a combination of the author’s practical experience and research in the air and in the tunnel, working with AFF students, AFF candidates at pre-courses and courses, AFF Instructors, AFF Evaluators and AFF Instructor Examiners.

This outline is presented in the order of practice, and is laid out using Whole, Part, Whole-teaching techniques.  The skydives are in a building block order, and will help you succeed in the next jump.  It is recommended to master each skill before moving on to the next.

A lot of these skills and sequences can be practiced in the wind tunnel.  I have found it is very beneficial for all candidates to use someone with experience in body flight coaching and who is also an active AFF Evaluator or Designated Evaluator.  Video is very helpful with your debriefs so it is highly recommended.  It usually takes about 15-25 jumps to get in the groove before your evaluation jumps.
